“Oh, you know about that?” I said, rather startled—and ready to change the subject.

For a long moment I had glimpsed another of my memories—a graceful city; but carved into cinders by kri-Yanaq power beams then the glimpse faded and M’rel’s eyes danced with laughter.

“Families always exchange their best gossip from the moment they meet—one never knows when cycles will cross again! Oh, I have heard all about you—Jerran the beastkiller, Jerran the man who lost his past, Jerran the lover of the fair Tirzel and of no other. And many things besides! Jerran, you are a known man! The ruined city rose before my inner vision once more.

It was Bexitor. The carnage had been terrible indeed.

And we had lost, had lost, had lost—

Mercifully, it vanished before I could understand any more.

In a very soft voice, first looking away from her, then, as I spoke, finding my eyes drifting into communication with her, I said, “Yes, I am frightened.”

I paused and breathed deeply; but I did not feel any easier in my mind. A sudden weight had come upon my spirits, and I did not understand.

“But I am not frightened of you, M’rel,” I said at last, and my eyes did not leave hers again. “I am afraid of my own mind, which calls up things unbidden that I do not wish to see—horrors for which it gives me no explanations, beauties that I cannot ever reach from Greyland. I find I know about the stars; and then know nothing. Things, thoughts, emotions, realizations suddenly sweep through me, then leave me like a poor sea-thing lost and quickly drying on the sand, in the sunlight…”
